It's almost time...

So given that it's beginning of August and I have 6 weekdays before I have to head back to school to prep, I am nervous! My classroom has all new furniture and shelves, lots of people donated a lot of awesome things to my room, but I will need to start lesson/centers planning, figuring out what I want to do for classroom management, how to assess my kids.....the list is endless. However, I am very very excited!

Sometimes the thought of me teaching kindergarten is still surreal. I have been in school since I have been in school for 22 years and now I have the job that I have been dreaming about since I was 5. I am entering the real world. AHH!

I got it!

I am happy to announce that I got a part-time Kindergarten teaching position at a Christian school! What a dream come true. Well, I wouldn't really say "I" got it, because it was the works of many people's prayers and advices, and, of course, the work of God.

"For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. "

So I was taking a break from all the reading and project madness for school and decided to look through my art supplies at home. Since I am at it, I might as well clean it up:).
my shoebox of paint and ribbons

my $5 ribbon collection, from Target, Fabricland, and Michaels (I forgot I recently bought a few more spools...)

My mini NEW paint collection from Michaels

Paint samples (great for cutting up) and square coloured pieces in my waffle box

Box of scrapbook paper

My Michaels and dollar store stamps:)

Blank cards, stickers, and FREE envelopes from Carlton Cards (you just have to ask)

All cleaned up:)
This is the start of my art supply collection, hoping one day I will have something like this....

Quotes on Education :)

As I am working on an assignment that requires me to look up quotes on education, I stumble upon the following. All so inspiring!

"Teaching is the profession that teachers all the other professions." -Unknown

"If you can read this, thank a teacher." -Unknown

"The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." -Dr. Seuss

"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood." -Fred Rogers

"There is a brilliant child locked inside every student." -Marva Collins

"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." -Henry Brooks Adam

"A characteristic of a normal child is he doesn't act that way very often." -Unknown

Hope you are inspired:)

"Me" Bulletin :)

This blogging thing is definitely not easy. I have no idea how to align the pictures. Time for some researching on how to do this.
On a side note, there is only 2 weeks left of practicum. I am going to miss my kids and getting to teach so much!

Pumpkins, Pumpkins Everywhere!

Our bulletin board.

So after apples, I started teaching about pumpkins.

This is the life cycle of the pumpkin. This took a surprisingly long time though.
My sponsor teacher did finger painting with the children, mixing different amounts of yellow and red to make different shades of orange.
Using up the pumpkin seeds.
As an conclusion to apples and pumpkins, we compared the two.

This weekend my sponsor teacher and some of my cohort friends attended a Pro-D workshop.

We were to build a community and a bridge.

Balloon rockets.

An "outfit" to protect a potato.

Testing the "outfit."

Wonderful view from where we had the workshop :).
On a side note.
There is only 3 weeks left of my practicum (I can't believe 10 weeks have gone by already)!!! My mixed feelings of excitement and nervousness are starting to appear.

Apples, Apples, One, Two, Three

So our class just finished the Apples unit and moving onto Pumpkins! During this unit we had a field trip to Apple Barn, Abbotsford. Although it was a long way out from Vancouver, it was definitely worth it. There were multiple schools there, but everything was very organized and to keep kids occupied they had a playground, a mini "zip-line," 1-floor high slides, and the most amazing jumping pillow (basically it was like a jumping castle, but with no top). The actual tour itself consists of tasting apples, learning about an old fashion apple sorter, going to the petting farm, learning about the life cycle of apples and pumpkins, going on a hayride, and actually picking a pumpkin from the patch.

As I was wrapping up the apples unit, I put together a booklet for each child of what he or she learned/did for the past couple of weeks.
Clockwise from top: colour of their favourite apple (after an apple tasting at school), using their eyes to observe what the apple looks like on the outside and the inside, the four seasons of the apple tree, counting how many apples were un-painted, different combinations of 5 apples in a barrel, life cycle of an apple (pictures were cut out, then glued and organized on the life cycle chart), and the cover with a concrete poem of an apple.
